Mass. General Becomes First ER in State to Offer MAT

Massachusetts General Hospital is the first emergency department to offer buprenorphine to patients with opioid use disorder who want to start treatment immediately.   Doctors who want to prescribe buprenorphine, likely as a key part of a medication-assisted treatment (MAT) plan for opioid use disorder, can now opt to complete an eight-hour course—which includes listening to people who are on MAT and how it has improved their lives—and sign a physician waiver from the federal government. While this ensures that physicians know what it is they’re prescribing before they do so, some view this extra training as a hurdle by physicians that prevents them from offering this treatment.   That is something Dr. Ali Raja, executive vice chairman of the Department of Emergency at Mass. Gener...

Taking on Addiction: Are Cities Helping or Hurting the Homeless Population?

Recently, I traveled to Portland for a conference; an Oregon city I hadn’t visited in several years. As I walked the streets during breaks in my work schedule, I was surprised at the number of homeless people camped out on every corner. Tents adorned the sidewalks, campers panhandled pedestrians who walked by, and garbage was everywhere. I even spotted a couple of used needles sitting atop a public trashcan. The Increasing Homeless Population As it turns out, Portland’s homeless population has been on a steady increase the past several years, rising 10% from 2015 to 2017. In fact, it’s become so prevalent that the city was forced to declare a homeless emergency several years ago, an issue that has not only impacted those on the streets, but local Portlanders as well. In a recent K...

Florida Sues Pharmacies Over Opioid Sales

The state of Florida is suing two of the nation’s largest drugstores, Walgreens and CVS, for allegedly contributing to the opioid crisis, reports the Associated Press. The lawsuit argues that these pharmacies have contributed to the opioid crisis in the U.S. by way of inflating the supply and demand for opioids in the state. This is the latest action the state has taken in the fight against moneyed pharmaceutical interests, and this case will be added to an existing lawsuit against Purdue Pharma, the maker of the highly addictive opioid painkiller, OxyContin, and other pharmaceutical companies who have been accused of contributing to the ongoing opioid crisis in the country. What do Pharmacies have to do with the Opioid Crisis? Attorney General Pam Bondi said that CVS and Walgreen...

Live The Questions To Find The Answers

“If you live the questions, life will move you to the answers.” – Deepak Chopra, Indian-American physician, a holistic health/New Age guru, and alternative medicine practitioner (born 1947)These are wise words from a person that millions find inspirational and insightful. The fact that everyone sometimes finds it difficult to figure out the answers to seemingly impossible or complex questions doesn’t negate the fact that there are ways to go about finding the right path – if we choose to do so. The secret seems to be to embrace the questions and live them, not do everything we can to avoid them, as if in so doing they’ll somehow go away. They won’t. It’s only by living in the present and doing our best to address the questions that we’ll have any hope of finding the answers. The quest isn’t...

Remember What Matters

“When things are taking their ordinary course, it’s hard to remember what matters.” – Marilynne RobinsonLife gets busy. In fact, it can get so busy that you may often find yourself in a frenzy just trying to get things done. One after another, chores and tasks clamor to be tended to. The kids need a meal, the laundry’s piled up in the corner, your best friend calls and desperately needs to talk, you haven’t gone to the grocery store and your boss just handed you a hot project. Not only do you start to feel like a robot just going through the moves, you also have no time to think about what matters. It’s time to slow down and take a few breaths. The chores and duties will still be there, but you’ll be better able to sort through what’s urgent and needs attention right now and what can wait a...

Growth, Freedom And The Power To Choose

“Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” – Viktor FrankeThings come at us every day, all day, without exception. We’re stimulated by, presented with challenges and provided the opportunities to respond to these situations and experiences – also without exception. Sometimes it feels like a burden, something we’d rather escape from than tackle. Other times, however, we look forward to jumping in and taking action. There is that critical moment between stimulus and response where we exert our personal power, the power to choose. Inherent in this power of choice is the pathway to growth and freedom. What often stops us from making certain choices is fear. Yet everyone experiences fear a...

Beginnings And Endings

“Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” – Seneca, Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman, dramatist, and humorist (ca. 4 B.C.-65 A.D.)Chapters in a book, seasons of the year, life’s births and deaths – everything has a beginning and an end. Why should we fear either one? Whether or not we’ve grown up fearing change or welcoming it, one thing is certain: Things will always be in a state of change. There will be beginnings even as there are endings. How we choose to embrace or avoid them is up to us.The good news is that we do possess this choice. This is immensely liberating for it means that we’re not locked into some predetermined result. By our own actions – or inaction – we will reap the benefits or experience the consequences. Knowing that we have the power to affect o...

How To Live A Daring Life

“A sheltered life can be a daring life as well. For all serious doing starts from within.” – Eudora Welty, American author (1909-2001)What comes to mind when you think of someone who’s daring? Is it a mountain climber attempting to scale a formidable peak? Is it a brilliant researcher who discovers a cure for a disease that has been a scourge on humanity for centuries? Is it your loved one who inspects every room in the house upon your return to ensure that it’s safe to enter? Is it you?Everyone has daring in them – although few recognize this ability. How do we know we are daring? How can we cultivate and nurture it so that it becomes yet another manifestation of who and what we are? As with most anything that is truly meaningful and has value, daring starts from within. This should serve ...

Enlightenment Is Permanent

“Enlightenment is permanent because we have not produced it; we have merely discovered it.” – Chogyam Trungpa, Buddhist meditation master, scholar, teacher, poet and artist (1939-1987)What is enlightenment? How do you know if you have it? Can you learn to be enlightened? These are questions that have some merit and we might even ask ourselves them from time to time. Most of us, however, are too busy with the business of life to spend much time thinking about whether or not we’re enlightened.Maybe the concept is so profound that it’s beyond our grasp. On the other hand, maybe it’s so basic and permanent simply because it is so very much a human condition. Still, enlightenment, once we know we’ve achieved it, is much more a discovery than anything else. We know, for example, that we didn’t c...

The Powerful Energy Of A Wish

“The wish within a human being is the most powerful energy that exists.” – Swami Rudrananda, founder and director of The Movement Center and master of kundalini yoga (1928-1973)Is a wish purely daydreaming? Could it be something more? Could wishes actually transform us so that we push ourselves to achieve goals we’d otherwise consider unattainable? In truth, no one accomplishes much of anything substantive without a desire to achieve it. Whether that’s a task that you don’t really want to do but know you must or should, or pursuing a goal that you’ve long held but never before got around to tackling, or attempting to resolve a troubling issue that you know has been holding you back. You have to want something enough in order to take action toward achieving it.But where, you might ask, do w...
